Sold a 2nd hand engine. I never heard it run nor did the fella before me. On inspection of the bottom end it seemed A1. Now the boy I sold it to has rattled it 100/120 mile later. Do I owe him a refund? Is it sold as seen?

I had this problem when buying an engine off a Renault specialist however the problem was apparent on first startup when the engine was fitted.

He traded as a business and gave me a full refund.

Sold as seen, you never heard it run and nor did the fella before you. I'm sure you let the fella that bought it off you know this ?

Plus it ran for 100 miles so it was running. Chance you take with 2nd hand stuff sold privately.

It's not nice but ild say tough luck on his end. If he was advised you never heard it running, its sold as seen. Plus who knows what kind of death it got for 100 odd mile... Musta went well for a while at least

To many cars
as said, if you stated you never heard it run, he accepted/knew this, he still purchased, no longer your concern, you took a chance buying it, then the new buyer took a chance knowing the consequences it may not run

100% right Agree with all comments above -- he's taken a chance in a private sale - its run fine for 100 miles or so - who's to say he didnt fit it right or even drove the togs off it anyway? You don't owe him an iota in my opinion. I certainly wouldnt be expecting any form of refund - if i bought something and was told that it was never heard run, or that there was no known history, i'd accept at that point i was taking a massive chance. I mean he's sort of shot himslef in the foot anyhow telling you he has put miles on it - usually when they say i've only done 100 miles or so, i gaurantee you its more like 500 or god knows what.

No comeback from a legal or moral point of view.

You've also no idea how it was fitted.

Are you friends with him? Will telling him where to go ruin a lifelong relationship?

If no then you owe him nothing lol

If he was a friend and he whinged about a non-guarnatee'd engine lasting a period of time then giving up, then I'd see it as no big loss falling out with him anyway lol. Suck it up.

Lol did you get it fitted yet?
Yeah noisy top end which i assumed to be a tappet having sat so long. Stripped it to find one ****ed rocker arm. Swapped cam, rockers, tappets from the old engine and its right as rain. Just a leaky box to fix and should be all good

And you dont know if he was a bellend and didnt put any oil or anything in the engine before he drove it 200 miles or so. Buyer beware.

Quick update. I offered the fella a quater of his money back as a good will gesture but he refused so im now taking the "f##k off" approach. Nothing more I can do I believe.

He definately hasn't an ounce of wit then. Whats he going to do now? He should have took the money and thanked you for it !
