Yeah I use a saxo. Personally I wouldn't want it lowered though you might get away with it if the suspension was firmer. My sump guard takes a right battering though as far as I know she is on the original suspension components so might be a bit saggy.

Yeh I bought the saxo and it was already lowered, it's not mad low and I could prob get away with it, jus the torsion bar would be a real pain to raise tho :worried:.

@mike150 - you have it covered there. I carry a few tools but tbh without parts, all you will be able to do is tighten stuff. A bit of electrical wire, connectors and fuses are handy. Also, a tow rope! I won't be competing on the 8th as my navvie is away but I will probably go and marshal. For your own safety, make sure anything you carry in the car is well secured.

@Mark_S - ballynahinch tends to use good surfaces so probably a good 1st event to test the car.

Yip, that's about it. It's hard knowing where to draw the line with tools tho.. We've enough to change a wheel, a tow rope incase I get us bogged in again (Dungannon lanes lesson 1)... oh, and the best tool of all has been a 'poking stick' I got for free in a forest in Omagh to clear burning grass out of diff guard! (QUB Summer Lanes lesson 15)

We've a small 1st aid kit (incase I break a nail).. and lots of water and headache tablets (for when the arguments break out).

..The only other essentials tho would be a couple of pens / highlighters so you can sribble a few notes on the diagrams if you's want.

@mike150 & @Mark_S , if you's are hoping to be out then get the entries in asap. Last year they had a full entry for Ballynahinch.

Can anyone help?
I've just bought a saxo...........im 40 with a perfect driving history.........how does anyone insure their cars?
I can't mirror my NCB and consequently the cheapest quote is £450 with zenith. Flux quoted 560 with 3000 mile limit.
Ea Davies would not cover it after they asked me if I would be doing trackdays with the car.
Insurance is the biggest pain in the hole!

myself and @RallyCiaran both use REIS
http://www.reis.co.uk/

I'm 35, and have a GTI6 insured as a rally car with them for £220. An Extra £60 covers you on event, saving you the extra £15 your charged per event for insurance. This policy also includes road miles, so your grand travelling to/from event. Commuting is a big no no though.

@Mark_S It'll be our 1st time at Magherafelt, but we're led to believe it's run mainly through Davagh Forest so perhaps plenty of slipping and sliding alongside ditches and trees etc... Check out @peespeed 's album from last year... http://public.fotki.com/speedy/2013-events/madmc-targa-rally/ @John_MK5 would know more (look for the 'most sideways' MX5 in the photo's :p)

@mike150 Not sure how anyone else is insuring their cars, but the policy I took through EA Davies is only to cover Social, Domestic & Pleasure... it doesnt cover the rallying. Instead we pay an extra £15-20 along with the entry fee to be covered by the insurance that the club has arranged for the day. This is very cost effective if your only planning on doing a few rallies / track days throughout the year, but there will come a point where it would likely be cheaper to organize your own motorsport cover... We havnt figured out that point yet.
You're right tho, insurance can be a pain in the hole... bit of a neccessary evil.

That's got my attention!.. We've been lucky enough to do a fair few rallies so will look into this now myself I think.

Anything more than about 4 navs or targas and it pays for itself. Definately worth considering. Would highly recommend REIS as well. Cheapest rally insurance i could find.

Magherafelt may not be running on the set date this year. The date initially picked falls on the same date as Ryan Bradleys anniversary mass so it might be changed or cancelled as he was a clus member. Ill keep you all updated. Either way the entries go to my house so ill pick and choose who gets doing it :-p

When I called EA Davies they the guy seemed fast and efficient and he casually asked if I would be using the car for track days, I said yes and he promptly refused to go any further saying that a car on limited miles could not be covered by them knowing it would be used for track days. I said that I just needed road cover to get to the event and he didn't want to know! He went on to say that I would need a specialist insurance company and when I asked if he knew any the answer was no! In summary useless and I wish I never said yes to track days.

When I am paying £280 for an Audi Quattro doing big miles how can a company justify £1130 (in the case of my own insurer) to cover a £1000 car with a 3000 mile limit 3rd party only:mad:

Motorbike insurance is easy and cheap, I'm paying £80 for a bike that won't keep the front wheel down until 126mph and second bike is nothing extra if it's a lower group.

My mate is trying RIES in the morning. We bought the car between us so its a 50/50 problem!!!!

@mike150 you can also try McGrady insurance. I have my saxo insured with them for road miles and event cover for £300. Just to clarify though, on event cover means third party cover to meet the road traffic act on road sections between tests. If you bin it on a test, it's your own problem.

We are going to try McGrady on Monday, I just thought of them today.
Ries were a no go as they insist you have an msa licence and we don't, I haven't had one in 15 years!
The pain in the hole continues!

Cars good though, however I was flushing the coolant today and the plastic thermostat housing fell to bits, can't get one until next week.

Yea vts, plastic hose fitting that screws onto the thermostat with 3 6mm screws.
14 quid off ebay although a metal one is avalible for 40 quid from a rally place in England so they must break!

Going back to the tool requirement.

We carry one of the cheap tool kits with sockets, spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. That way were covered for most eventualities.

We have a small snap on buzz gun and the Jack has a wheel nut welded on to it so we can now manage to stop, change the wheel and get going again in about 60 seconds.

Can't wait to be back out next year.

Although our car lends itself to this. We have boxes (card and tape so they aren't likely to hurt you in the event of an accident) that sit in front of each seat under our knees.

In there we keep mars bars, red bull, spare roamers, pens, phones, etc. All lined with foam so nothing rattles during the event.
