Hi, wondering if anyone can help me out. I bought a mk4 golf 1998 and the speedometer stoped working. Along with the odometer so my millage dnt change and also the fuel needle isn't accurate no more. Iv done a search here but looks like no one got a clear final answer.

I had my abs light on but I change the right wheel arch sensor and the light turned off. Drove for a week and now the speedo stopped. It happend after I stalled really hard..

Any ideas people? Heard if might be the clips at the back of the clocks?? Any ideas?

Thanks

Trademark2K6 - No idea what clips you might mean. Who told you that? If you want the car scanned for faults let me know. Sounds like it's just the sensor on the gearbox or a similar related problem. That wouldn't explain the fuel needle being wonky though. If you did happen to have faulty clocks, I have a couple of spare boards so I could swap them in, recode your mileage and keys to match everything.
You say you stalled really hard, what exactly happened?

jaycee3 - I can reset needle positions but in involves taking the clocks apart and recalibrating them. Quick question though. How do you know the temp needle is wrong and it's not an engine problem?

Might be the sensor, what engine is in it??? Ive saw quite a few of the petrol's break the wiring for the speedo sensor below the battery box due to corrosion.

But theres probably a good chance your clocks may be faulty too - just on the fuel gauge fault!

The dials have been changed, there is no sign of overheating when the needle says it should be, and it jumps straight up when the car is turned on.

Sounds like the needles were put on wrong. What position do they jump to when you turn the car on?

So did all these problems occur after the clocks were changed or before?
Who changed them? Are they the right clocks?

Usually jumps to just before half way, and after driving a while it goes off the end.

The previous owner changed them but he did point it out to me, so don't know who fitted them. He mentioned some guy up round Mallusk that did all his work, might have been a VW specialist :confounded: will check the service book for receipts.

I would say it only happened after they were changed.

Its a GTTDI, has these dials but with a diesel rev counter:

Well first of all your needles have been taken off, shoved back on and not calibrated at some stage. A VW 'specialist' wouldn't have left them like that.

Sounds like you need the clocks properly coded and recalibrated. Where abouts are you?

I'll give you a break down of what I charge for fitting stuff.

I normally charge from £40 for working on clocks depending what needs done. I could do yours for £50 if they just need the needles set and maybe recoded. Which isn't bad considering I need to take them out and dismantle them.

I have a set of anniversary clocks here I'd let go for £145 or £180 fitted if you were interested. They're fully coded, and have the extra functions enabled that you don't normally get. The thing is that you have no trip computer judging by that pic above. For the trip computer to be fitted you need a bit of wiring (4 wires from the clocks to the wiper stalk), a new wiper stalk with buttons to go through the options on the clocks. I charge £80 for fitting including the parts for the trip computer.

Alternatively I have a set of anniversary 'style' clocks with no trip computer which might just go straight into your car with no extra wiring. I'd probably be able to do it for £80 fitted.

Fitting new clocks obviously means having mileage set and keys recoded. That's included in those prices.

Think GC service centre might have fitted them as there is receipts for all sorts of work and stamps for services from them.

I do have a trip computer by the way.

Hmm, not sure what to do. Don't know if it bothers me enough to pay £50 to fix and dont have the money to buy your clocks as much as I'd like them.

Off topic - but my key casing has broke on both sets of keys (the metal bar for the keyring). Is it simple to get a new casing and switch everything over?

Well if you have a trip computer it makes things easier.
Your other option is to take the clocks out yourself and bring them to me and I'll reset the needle positions for £25. Then you can just plug them back in.

You can get new keyfobs on ebay. (but the buttons would need recoded to match your car).

Wouldnt even know where to start to take them out lol. Can you recode buttons? Seems to be one thing after another at the minute with my car :worried:

Just buy the remote part then, you dont have to buy a complete key UNLESS you want another one!

So just buy an old used key? If Im changing the cover just will it still need programmed after? :confounded:

Might just superglue the part back on...

Just buy a new key fob. Forget about the key unless you need another spare.
If you change the cover you'll need to take the transponder chip out and put it in your new cover. Then it'll not need recoded. But, I'd say you have about a 1 in 10 chance of changing the transponder without breaking it.

Save yourself the hassle and do it properly with a new fob.

bernard2 - Get it scanned with VCDS (vag-com) to see what your faults are. I'd say you have an issue with your abs system if you're having problems with the 4 motion and the traction control.
