I'm looking for a desktop PC (windows based) to use solely for making and copying media.
Not bothered on the latest operating systems, as long as the processor is up to the job of video editing.

What's out there in RMS land, or can someone reccommend something value for money, I don't mind building my own, but it's been a few years since I've done anything like that.

Max budget £1200 including screen

£1200 is easy spent on a decent GPU, CPU and Motherboard.

Solely for doing media, I wouldn't change the CPU, RAM, SSD, HDD or PSU there. You could maybe skrimp on the graphics card but if it were me building a new computer I'd like something that would stay relevant for a few years.

Edit: I suppose he could go for the non-K version of the i7-4790 also and possibly change to 32gb of 1600mhz ram. The motherboard is £30 more than the cheapest socket 1150 on that website and offers some nice features.

If you're not going to be overclocking the CPU, I'd not bother going for a K-Series, £1200 will get you a beast of a machine though,

the footage your editing, would it be 1080p or will it be higher?

It can be done for under £1k (this lot is £990 inc vat) including the monitor and postage to NI (obv if its going to you on mainland, its probably free).
This is a quote from the PC Specialist company, so not even the cheapest and has potential to upgrade ram etc down the line as software requirements change.

I'm not investing in 4k yet so keeping with 1080p for now.

CPU: i7 4790 (If you're competent with overclocking, buy the K and clock it a bit in the future to increase the power when its needed)
Cooler: Personally, I'm using a ThermalRight Silver Arrow SB-E - the 2 140mm fans are ran at 600rpm so completely silent yet very cool
RAM: 32gb of 1866Mhz DDR3 (I'm using Corsair Vengeance Pro and its never failed me, lifetime warranty too)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 970 4GB - Great card and very compatible with video editing suites
Motherboard:Gigabyte (I'm not up to date on the latest Z97 boards so cant make a good call here)
Case: Personal Choice, you can go cheap and cheerful or stylish, its up to you
PSU: Corsair 550w (or higher if you go SLI in the future)

Our work machines were set up as follows for storage:
250Gb SSD - Windows Boot Drive
250Gb SSD - Scratch Disc (working on live projects etc)
2tb WD Green HDD - Mass Storage (completed projects and other files)

Monitor - I'm using a Samsung 27" T27D390S - its a monitor with inbuilt TV function, IPS quality colour and great image, again it can be personal choice here

EDIT: Brendy, I find it laughable that they're using a 350W power supply for that rig...

If you're ordering from PC Specialist you get £15 off if you use voucher code PCG82.
Not much but every little helps.

PC Specialist are overpriced and lacking in quality.

as Simon says (no pun intended) just buy the parts, and assemble it yourself (or one of us will do it for you)

Legit windows can be had very cheaply (i'll send you an email address to contact when im home!)
