Malta isnt that big of an island so could well be that mileage, I have been over a few times on holidays and love to have brought a few things home.

Wouldnt happen to be a dealer doing it regularly?

There seems to be a few at it. I've been getting offers of Metros from a couple of lads over there pretty regularly but there's no money in it (yet). They seem to do it quite a bit with older 'retro/classics'.

Havent really done much. Got it through mot on Monday there. Done nothing bar a set of front brake pads thanks to @scubbay and fitted a lucas tractor switch as the ignition was broken.

My parents had a fleet of these things in the early 90's. When they finally bought a Ford KA I thought christmas had arrived a year early...

This thread feels like it's going to be epic

Looks a decent one (if you can say that about a Lada).

You'll have some laugh in that bus!

Please don't turn this lump of Communist comedy into a lanes rally car, it's already great. I've not seen one on Northern Irish roads in at least a decade, and the last one I saw was also orange. I've seen plenty on dashcam videos, usually being binned into the scenery.

I imagine that car is a total hoot to drive.

My only memory of these are the jokes from primary school.

I don't know if some of the comments in here are as ironic as your mad purchase. I hope you're planning something even madder for it!

My Granda had a white Riva when were kids, always hated the abuse I got over the thing but I loved it...especially compared to the aul fella's Regata!
Must hunt out the photo's of it.

How's the handling? Since finding the wonders of Russian dashcam videos I've wondered how Rivas are to drive. If it's not already pretty fun in current guise, then I'm actually quite keen to see how it develops.

Love this! My mates mum used to have one, it was always a 'treat' (for some odd reason) to get run home in the Lada. I think in my head it was just a mini Volvo.

I'm with you. I must be missing something!

Still, I always have respect for someone saving a classic and taking time and effort to make it better, so I applaud you on that front.

I can guess my comment is one of the ones that aroused suspicions. Unfortunately, at the time it was pretty serious. I've always found things from the other side of the Iron Curtain interesting, including their cars. Most of them couldn't hold a candle to anything produced elsewhere but I find them appealing.

To be honest, its a solid as a rock, handling isnt great but its 1988 and runs a steering box. Comfort wise its great, great visibility, easy to steer, starts first turn of the key, brakes are good all things considered, just very slow....for now.
