Hi guys I have a weird problem with my m3 at the min. When the car is stationary and you take off the car makes a clunk noise.Doesn't always do it though.Only sometimes. The noise seems to be coming from the driver side rear.I got the car checked out thinking it was a brake shoe or brake caliper sticking. But both where ruled out. They where both disconnected from the car and when they tried to turn the wheel it was very stiff. But he said when you rotated it back slighty and forward again the wheels rotated as nothing was wrong. The mechanic was mayb thinking it could be the diff.Hes going to disconnect the shafts coming out of the diff and turn the wheels and see if that rules out the diff.Ive tried checking online for info, but everywhere seems to say e36 m3 evos diffs are bulletproof.Theres no noise coming from it and the car drives fine.Just that random clunk on take off sometimes.Any ideas? Thanks

There could be any number of things at fault, without looking at it any answer posted here is just a guess.

Contact bryan at dungorkin autos for any tips on what it could be

If it's clunking when changing gear there's something called the m3 clunk but since yours is just doin moving from stationary god knows

Prop shaft engaging etc

Found this...ignore the 318 bit

Basically. ..It's pretty common....my 328 did it all the time Esp in first gear and reverse

Oh I know wat you mean.I'm just hoping it's not the diff.theres no noise apart from the odd clunk on take off.but on the ramp the wheels are like stiff to turn.then they free up.i was hoping someone with an e36 might of had similar symptoms to advise.

Rear trailing arm bushes.

Drive shafts.

Prop shaft.

Input bearings worn.

Could be any number of things to be honest, or a combination of a couple of things. Best taking it to someone that knows older BMW's (y)

Neil Jackson in Saintfield would be worth ringing if that's not too far afield.

He does our gearbox rebuilds and diff rebuilds/repairs, and is very good at what he does.

His number is 07921 154341

Tell him Nicky Smyth gave you his number if you're ringing him (y)

As said the bush on top of the diff bolted to the car chassis is extremely common to deteriorate. I've had two that needed replaced and one had to be welded when it broke off the chassis all together. It had the exact symptoms as yours.

I had the guibo rubber in the middle of the prop shaft go on me before, destroyed the carrier bearing and thumped the floor when moving off... could be that too!

not hard mate, 6 bolts I think holds the guibo rubber thing in, drop that out and fire a new one in, its like a vibration damper on the prop shaft, I didn't drop the exhaust or anything, was easy enough to get at
