When the snow recedes and the mud prevails, those hardy boys & girls at the newly re-opened ‘Nutts Corner Shale Arena’ will make the best of a mucky situation and present us with CAR FOOTBALL... or ‘Mud Ball’ as the natives are calling it.

On Sun 10th Feb this recently reinvented venue will hold a soccer tournament like no other, for the tools of the trade will differ somewhat from the usual; the players’ boots will be stamped hard on an accelerator pedal and heavy metal will be the object of the day as the football in question will be a specially fabricated 5’ tall steel sphere.

This giant football is the only one in the world that can take the hard and heavy abuse dished out by the ‘Mud Ballers’. There will be no fake injuries here. Imagine soccer crossed with a Demolition Derby and you will be somewhere in the right ballpark. Adding to the fun will be a full program of Stock Car racing with Bangers, 1800 Rookies and Junior Stox (1200 & 1400).

Backing that up will be the Dirt Drifting:
Drivers can take to the track in even a standard, non track prepared car for what is essentially a Track Day on Dirt. As far as eligible cars; drivers may enter with a Fwd, Rwd or 4wd ... Car, Van or even Jeep, so just about anyone can take part. Ex-Racer turned promoter Wayne Owens is keen to spread his enthusiasm for low cost motorsport.

“We aim to make it as easy as possible for people to join in. You can even carry a passenger to share the fun with. The main aim is the Fun Factor and all are welcome to come along and muck in!”

The original plan with the CAR SOCCER was to do just what we had done before at other venues, with a 42" inflatable ball. The problem is that if drivers were to drive how they and everyone else wanted to see them drive, then ANY inflatable ball would not last longer than 60 seconds.

I drew some inspiration from the Americans, however even their balls aren't big enough for us!

Instead of a 42" inflatable toy, or a 40" steel gas container, we will be playing with a 60" (or 5') custom made steel ball!

ELIGIBLE CARS:

We invite 4 teams of 3 BANGERS (or standard cars) to do battle in the Mud Ball Tournament. Alternatively, if you are an individual without a team then we want to hear from you. I will look forward to hearing your feedback!

The pre-existing drainage issues are now sorted and the surface is being regraded in preparation for our next outing on 10th Feb, where the main feature of the event will be CAR FOOTBALL. Not to be missed!

Got the steel to make the Big Ball today.

2 sheets of 10' x 5' x 2mm
+ 4 sheets of 8' x 4' x 2mm

... Probably best to give this thing a nudge rather than a thump!

So, £300 in materials later, these are the first steps in creating the world's largest steel soccer ball
Total diameter once finished is likely to be 59.5 inches. More pics of the progress we make tomorrow.
Meanwhile, here's where we started today ...

Come along on Sunday @ 1pm to join in the fun. If Car Football is as popular as I believe it will be then we will do this regularly.
At least on this one subject, no-one can bust my balls!
