My M3 came supplied with this motorsport wheel in the boot and while mint it is the wrong wheel for the car. This is a pre evo or LTW 3.0 M Double Spoke forged wheel.

So this was sold on ebay (£180) I was shocked at how much it went for actually.

The search was then on for a mint polished Motorsport wheel. (M Double spoke Style 24)

Found this one on ebay for £50 Bargain :grinning: its not perfect but it is presentable and does comes with a Michelin Pilot tyre and I could have it refurbed if its bugging me.

VANOS Rebuild using Beisan Systems S50 Rattle repair kit and S50 VANOS seals kit.

To complete the job I also ordered E39 M5 Solenoid cover seals, Vanos Filter and oil pressure regulator seals along with new high tensile bolts for the vanos solenoid covers.

Valve clearances were also checked and 8 shims replaced.

VANOS off

Part of the Anti Rattle repair procedure requires the engine to be retimed, This wasn't exactly as straight forward as one would hope. After retiming the engine the timing was still off so something wasn't quite right.

The exhaust cam was at 6.4 degrees on idle and it should be closer to 0 degrees, the tolerance on the S50 engine is 2 degrees.

So everything was taken off and checked again.

Solenoid test using air.

So the vanos was operating correctly which means the issue was down to timing. Part of the problem turned out to be this bracket.

It was bent. This bracket is where the locking dowel is positioned to lock the crankshaft for timing as this bracket was bent this means the crank was set passed TDC (Top dead centre) and therefore the cams are timed to the incorrectly timed crankshaft. The assumption here is that when the VANOS was replaced by BMW during 2002 a mechanic left this locking dowel inserted into the crank when the timing was set, when the engine was turned over with the pin still in the crank this would bend the bracket in the direction of the engine rotation which means the next man to time the engine would run into this problem.

New bracket ordered from BMW, Only a £10 part but it plays an important role in timing.

Retimed with new bracket

And the end result

Running like a swiss watch now. The VANOS oil pressure was also checked and turned out to be low at 70 bar, this was adjusted to 100 bar as per BMW TIS spec.

Feels stronger than ever too especially low down the revs it just seems like the power is always available.

This has been quite an education along the way with regards to the diagnostic software and the finer workings of BMW's S50 Double VANOS system.

Many thanks to Tomas Narusa at Perfect Car, Dundalk for his expertise, Top fella, super reliable, Tomas knows his stuff.

Yes indeed, Its nice to have found a true BMW specialist that knows these engines well and actually completes the job properly, a talent that simply just does not exist in Northern Ireland.

I enjoyed reading the detail on the s50 and learned something new so thanks for posting. Lovely car but it's almost getting to the undriveable stage as it is flawless.

Thanks for the kind words, Its not quite flawless and I still have jobs lined up to do but this was one of the bigger issues needing addressed.
I do drive it (on dry days) and its an even better experience now

Also while the car was away getting the VANOS rebuilt I purchased freshly powder coated X Brace which was then fitted at Perfect Car Dundalk.

And a satisfying job completed tonight, Polish the BMW M Power lettering on the coil pack cover, the paint on the rocker cover and coil pack cover is still in near perfect condition so I got away with just polishing the lettering

And fitted with new shiny bolts

Literally breaks my heart that similar examples are just not available now at "sensible" money. :worried:

Looks absolutely superb.
