Williams lures Unilever away from Lotus

bottas_3.jpg

Williams F1 have signed a new multi-year partnership agreement with the global consumer goods company Unilever, beginning in 2015. Unilever previously had a sponsorship agreement with Lotus.

Unilever will use the unique platform of Formula One to further brand awareness for its leading performance deodorant brand, Rexona. The Rexona logo will appear on the sidepod, front wing and front wishbones of the Williams Mercedes FW37, as well as the team environment and apparel.

Santiago Iturralde, Rexona Global Brand VP, explains: “As the number one global top performance deodorant brand we are delighted to announce this partnership with Williams Martini Racing. Formula One exudes performance and is a captivating sport for millions of our consumers worldwide.”

“The adrenaline, stress, temperature and movement that the drivers, team and fans experience during a Formula One race undoubtedly make them sweat. This is the ultimate torture test for a deodorant – and Rexona won’t let you down,” adds Iturralde.

Furthermore Williams Advanced Engineering, the technology and engineering services business of the Williams Group, will be working with Unilever to provide support in the areas of sustainability and efficiency.

Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal, Williams Martini Racing, says: “We’re delighted to be partnering with a company of Unilever’s global stature in what is a long term collaboration. Williams has a history of partnering with consumer brands to elevate their global reach and we will be using the full range of marketing tools afforded by Formula One and Williams to help Unilever and Rexona achieve their goals. We both have a commitment to sustainability and we will be sharing Williams Advanced Engineering’s growing expertise in energy efficient technologies to jointly tackle this important issue.”

Ferrari spying on Mercedes: what's new?

ferrari_1.jpg

Some media have recently picked up on obvious spying from Ferrari towards other teams, seemingly surprised that this happens in the sport. In reality however, it's "normal".

Freelance photographer Miquel Liso caused a little stir when he found a woman dressed in Ferrari clothing to spy onMercedes AMG's pit box during the most recent Abu Dhabi test of November 25 and 26.

Could someone explain me what was this girl @ScuderiaFerrari doing above box of @MercedesAMGF1 with a termic camera? pic.twitter.com/IvMNaK9Pok

The images show her filming the Mercedes AMG W05 driving through the pitlane and stopping with their pit crew. Details about the camera later revealed that this was infrared footage, allowing the recorder - or Ferrari in this matter - to analyze how hot the tyres, bodywork or exhaust are when the car drivers through the pitlane. Perhaps even more interesting is the speed of heat buildup when the car stops.

Generally speaking, spying in Formula One is nothing new at all. While team try their best to protect their cars from public eye when in the pitlane, each of them hires photographers, either external or internal member of the team to sneak up on the details of others to try to learn from what others are doing.

Other than photography, and particularly during testing, foreign team members are often seen strolling through the pitlane, hoping to see something that can help their own teams. People with directional microphones are nothing new either as teams want to determine the exact maximum engine revs or turbo effects from the engine's noise in an attempt to analyse power output and energy management used on other engines.

All these 'dirty' tactics are probably part of the sport since its very beginning, while the availability of live GPS data has furthermore enabled teams to identify precisely which car is fastest in which type of corner.

Essentially, it's common knowledge, but doing it this obvious is rarely appreciated. It should therefore not come as a surprise that a Mercedes team member went up into the stands quickly to ask the woman to stop recording.

Probably just trying to learn the steering wheel and radio codes while driving, wouldn't read anything into it

Alonso almost stole the title in 2012 so it can't be that bad, mind you Alonso is the much better driver imo, Kimi will show just how ordinary Smettel is next year!

Who do you think will be closed to Mercedes-Benz next year: McLaren or Ferrari?

Willams for sure of the Benz powered teams, but if the Honda engine goes as good as it sounds it should be ahead of Ferrari

The thing with williams is, as Rob Smedley said, Merc don't allow them to use all the engine modes/maps so they have to make up the difference with chassis/aero, which in this engine formula will be very difficult.

Williams have shown this season they are in a very competitive car, i think next year they will be a lot closer.

Also think Ferrari will be up there again, cant see Vettel moving there if they don't have something up their sleeve!

Yeah apparently the Merc customers are banned by Mercedes from using certain engine/ERS modes, wouldn't be surprised if Merc had a termination clause in any contract they have with their customers, McLaren were never going to win a championship being a 'Privateer' team

Cannot see Ferrari getting from 7 or 8 to the top in one go. They have been nowhere to be seen for a long time, since well before these stupid "power units".

Have seen nothing in the Ferrari team, or their leadership, indicating any kind of major change of course.

Alonso left because he knows this.

Vettel has always had a hard on for Ferrari - following Schumacher's footsteps and all that. When Alonso left, he jumped. Getting his bee-hind kicked at RB by an Aussie kid probably helped too.

Cannot see anyone touching Merc next year, other than if they mess up themselves.

Williams have by far the strongest package outside Merc. And now they have the money as well, from a fantastic result this year, plus a new major team sponsor. Just hope they have been able to keep up the development of next year's car.

McLaren/Honda would be the dark horse. New car, new engine, new driver. I really hope they can do well (y) Just not too well, still want Lewis on the top spot at the end of the year :p

Yup, Wednesday now ffs, I think Alonso will team Button, Magnussen will go to GP2 against Vandoorne and whichever of them finishes 1st to their team mate will get Buttons seat in 2016 (probably waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off but worth a guess)

Mc Laren won't give Button a seat for 1 year especially with them trying to develop the new engine.

See Mark Webber had a massive crash in his Porsche, 185mph into a concrete wall. Taken to hospital but seems all is ok. Lucky boy!!!

Anyone know what actually happened yet? Not sure if he just lost it himself, or got caught up with that Ferrari? The video so far only seems to have the aftermath.

The safety cells in these cars really are amazing (y) Looks like carnage, the way these cars break apart on impact, but that is all part of the design apparently.
