To be fair it would probably take many weeks of my labour to get close to the purchase price of any trick parts. My sumpguard is 8 years old and has taken some abuse so I cant really complain at it needing replaced. The battery has never moved in the car previously but i will take note and make a better securing bracket. Not sure what trick parts would have prevented damage to either the battery or the sump guard.

Im not gonna even put underneath pictures of my mx5 up. Suffice to say some serious chassis rail work is due in the near future. Exhaust damage amounted to the 2 decat bolts breaking which was a nice surprise i suppose rather than holes in it.

Edited to add. Damage to a sumpguard! Isn't that what the sole purpose of one is, to get damaged in place of the sump?

Aye, but it would be 'handy' to be able to get it off again for the occasional oil change . @swansty are you planning on tackling this in the next few weeks, or just leaving as is for the Ulster?

@cauld1 Haha, I think they are designed more to deflect impacts rather than end up bent around the things they are supposed to protect!
@RComms I aim to have it replaced in time for the ulster but I suppose if worst comes to worst I could just leave it. Was trying to take it off to drain the coolant but I might just leave it in place now!

@swansty @RComms very valid points! I suppose it could have been worse, could have not had one. Im certainly glad my Donegal prep included putting one on the mx5

@swansty did you by any chance take my 106 guard? If not, i'll have a hunt to see if I still have it. It was a cup car pug sport guard.... I'd be pretty confident it wouldn't bend!

No I didn't take it. Was looking at buying a replacement but would probably have to weld on new mounting points. Im hoping I can just get a replacement made by the same fella who done the original. Don't suppose you have any gpN 106 suspension in the back of your garage?

no suspension. I sold it all on. I have the guard here, its a real good one. No mounting brackets for it though i'm afraid. Yours if its any use to you.

Cheers, will get speaking to this fella again on Monday and see what he can do. Will keep yours in mind if its easier for him to make new mounts.

On the plus side, there is a set of A021R's sitting in the shed in work....

I see they are using Jelf Insurance so the price of the insurance for the day is down to £12.50, good to see any cost reduction. And the entry fee is only £60. I don't have the figures but that must make it the cheapest Targa for a long time.

@swansty will be pleased (if he was doing the rally) to see that they haven't prohibited the use of helmets.
Any mention of cameras? Lol

The next round of the NI Navigation Rally Championship is the Dungannon Moonraker on the 5th September.
http://www.anicc.org.uk/Resources/Documents/20140905_DMC_MoonrakerRally_RegsEntryForm.pdf

It's a different type of Motorsport to the Targa rallies but I think anyone who does Targas would really enjoy it. The Dungannon roads are great so there is plenty of hoking about the countryside to do. The only extra thing you need in addition to your usual Targa rally car and crew is that you need to bring your own map with you. We only have 2 rules for the cars, a max of 2 spotlights, and no advertising, so if you have something old or interesting bring it out for a night craic.

I am the current championship coordinator and @swansty and @RComms are long term competitors so if you have any questions we will be able to steer you in the right direction.

I would love to have a go at this, but to be honest, anything I have read on the Navigation & Plotting has scared the b'jasus out of me to the extent that I doubt I could convince anyone to Nav for me!!

If entering as a Novice crew, are the instructions simplified, or is the route itself a different one? How likely is it that the Novice course can be reliably driven without a Rally Tripmeter?

You dont need a trip.

Its a piece of piss to navigate routes.

Grow a set of balls and enter it.

There is a lot to take in for the navigator on their first event as everything is new, but by their second event they will be on top of how it all works and they will be grand.

The Class 4 (Rally school) instructions are very straight forward, they aren't trying to catch you out. Depending on the event you might also be given some of the route before the start so that the first few sections will just be the crew getting used to working together in the car and not having to work anything out. Don't be put off by the navigation, it is aimed at people who haven't done it before so you will be grand.
All crews follow the same route, Class 1 and 2 would usually just do a bit extra at the end.
There is absolutely no requirement to have a trip. There are still some top crews who don't use a trip, they just use the standard odometer. As you are just starting you won't have any need for a trip. It will probably take you your first year of competing before you need to measure your distance that accurately.

Do these run the same as the night navigations down south here?

Similar but not the same. All the Northern events use only public tarmac roads so you don't need a 4wd car thats built like a tank, any normal road car will do. I haven't done a Southern night nav but I assume we are more strict on the time keeping for the regularity than they are.
