Just to keep things updated..

Despite being the most expensive rally to enter so far, the UAC's Retro Targa at the weekend was another great rally. About 10 different test sites with 2 used once and the rest visited twice. Some proper lanes too and so many varying terrains / surfaces.

I really struggled to judge some of the surfaces and so was lacking the confidence to push it along some of the slippery lanes (often referred to as 'having no balls'!).. It showed in the results too where the times for diffing round cones in a concrete yard were ok, while the slippy, twisty lanes times were a bit off the mark. Still happy with 9th considering we were 17th in the morning! lol.

Some folk were on an absolute mission at the top tho with Mark Faulkner and Will Corry (guided along by @earney ) neck and neck all day!.. Well done to Will and Richard on the over all win. (y) Another man that's been improving a lot recently is Anthony McGuckin in a @John_MK5 prepped MX5 finishing 8th.

Here's an idea of one of some of the terrain..

Ballynahinch Regs and entry are out now for anyone thats interested..
Welcome To Ballynahinch & District Motor Club Online !!
We'll hopefully be going, tho I think our wee chariot is in need of some TLC... We went from 'dip stick max' to 'dip stick min' again on Saturday.. See @peespeed 's pic from this time last year..

Seen the photo's on FB and some of the lanes looked very open and fast but equally that section with the mudsplash picture looked rough as fook..
Great to see a bit more variety in the entry too, would have loved to be out but 3 rallies in 4 weekends would not have gone down well with the minister for home affairs. ;) Besides, I was trying to sort out team MG which turned out to be a bit easier than I thought as I was looking at an ECU swap and all sorts until I finally spotted a snapped earth strap to the body from when the battery had broken free..:confounded:
Looking at our test by test times from Larne, we were dropping loads of time on the more open tests so it's either a lack of power or a lack of balls or a bit of both. I prefer to go with a lack of power myself...
Gonna get an entry in for the BADMC and got a fair bit of fettling to do ourselves before then. (y)

Worth noting too that Mark went straight down to Birr for the event there too @DavyC ! Really enjoyed last Saturday and certainly can see how us mx5 boys have it easy compared to the midgets in regards to clearance anyway!

Hopefully be out for Ballynahinch in the passenger seat again, isnt there another event very soon after that (magherafelt)? May get an entry in driving for it all being well.

Aye get the entry in for Magherafelt. Should be a great event. If all goes to plan it will be a completely new event moving away from the forest and should be 100% lanes and being based in swatragh (between Maghera and Coleraine). Just waiting on everything to get finalised and the regs and entry form should be out shortly. I'm looking forward to it anyway as its my home rally and will likely be the only event I'll do the rest of this year.

Ballynahinch, Magherafelt and Omagh are all due to run Targa events on the 14th, 21st and 28th of November respectively, not gonna be able to make them all so will be aiming to get to Magherafelts event
Aye there's a wild amount of events in november. Will have to get out for at least one.

@Dwd I'm running Bilstein shocks, standard springs and polybushes. The half cage and doorbars obviously add to the handling too!

Worth noting too that Mark went straight down to Birr for the event there too .

He'd a bit of drama with a broken diff housing but got the hold of a ratchet strap so continued, flat out with the diff strapped up to the sub frame!.. He said it was a class event.

@Dwd It's standard shocks and springs on ours... the rear springs nipped off a coil each so we're cruising a bit lower these days.

Broken diff housing and bust driveshaft, he got a lift back to base, got the van and trailer, back out for the car and got back in while the lunch halt was on. I came out of the lunch and saw him working on the car so gave him a hand get it sorted, wasn't gonna see him stuck after the effort he put in to get down for the event. He's mad keen to do a few more events down here

Saw a couple of mk2 MX5s going passed Ards Shooping centre near lunch, they looked like they had been up lanes.

@peespeed Saw the pics of the ratchet strap repair, good man for helping him sort it out. (y)
The event looked great, would like to get down there for a crack at some of them but with me working away from home all the time, extra time away at the weekends is hard to justify.. Still want to do something down there though.
Hoping to get some reasonable fettling on the MG to help us out a bit. Some repairs, some improvements.

@Dwd Standard MG ZR stuff which had poly bushes from the factory and stiff springs etc so not as bad as you'd imagine. Had a juke under the AHZ MX5 and it has some nice looking coilovers but there's plenty of kit out there with standard suspension that are doing just fine thanks so it's not essential. You'll gain more time by going the right direction round the tests with the throttle as wide open as you can without sliding around too much than fancy dancy coilovers imo, especially when starting out like me..

I was under the impression i had Bilsteins as that was what what was fitted to my car as standard but under closer inspection a few months ago I discovered somewhere along the line a previous owner had converted it over to the normal mx5 suspension. No idea why. I assume someone installed them with the intention of making the ride slightly more comfortable but I will never know for sure.

Is the Omagh lanes event going to run this year? Heard that last years event had been cancelled. Going to be tough going on the wee motor with 3 events one after the other!!!

Hi guys, think we're going to enter our first lanes rally at Ballynahinch on the 14th after doing night navs for a number of years but have a question around what class to enter! It says you can't enter the Novice class if you have had a class win on any MSA sanctioned event - does this literally mean any event irrespective of discipline?

Technically it does mean any other discipline, but no one is ever going to check, and navigation rallying is excluded.

Cheers Ciaran! As you know it was navigation rallying that had the potential to not less us run in the novice class so if they are excluded we should be good to go for novice!

And if any of you guys want a bit more experience behind the wheel without the costs of a lanes rally I highly reccommend our autosolo on the 7th November. My dad and myself will be drawing the tests and will be suitable for all road cars, wide open, all forwards and hopefully pretty flowing. Holding it this year at Dundrod Pits, both sides of the road. Let me know if you need any more info.
