You want cheap metal item, China man build you cheap metal item.

You want good quality metal item made exactly to your spec, China man can do this also... just need pay him more, but quality very good.

Exactly!

Surely rally men will be going mental for these. Not like they're worried about originality or keeping them mint.

Anyone who has built an older car will tell you that no matter how much bolt on bits or direct replacement parts you buy there will always be fetteling, so if you had to do some minor fetteling on a repo shell it wouldn't be a major disappointment imo

By the time you pay some man to strip, weld, prep and paint a uk shell id imagine that the price of landing with a new shell and painting it to a good standard wouldn't be much different. especially when you look at some of the prices for the reproduction panels he offers and consider the amount of time it takes to replace them.

My view is that it now give me a chance of actually having the chance to build 1 of these a few years down the line. I check prices and classified from time to time and its sad seeing the last few affordable examples rising in price to the stage someone like myself couldnt afford to buy 1 never mind build 1.

You may be quick, at the minute there is only 50 being produced. If there is enough demand there will be more.

Is it that they're old and 'out of copyright' so to speak? Hence Ford probably don't care too much.

There'd be no intellectual property on these now. Original drawings would still be copyright but if these shells were made from directly measuring an original shell there'd be no issue with copyright. However, if the word "Ford" was stamped anywhere that would infringe the Ford trade mark and Ford could have them stopped being made or imported.

I'd have thought it would cost a lot more to set everything up than what you'd get back only selling 50, maybe its a long term idea though.

As dandy says, £350k for a batch of 50? I know their setup and running costs are dirt cheap over there but they'd need to be planing to make a lot more than 50 to make it worth their while surely

Do Ford keep the original tooling for these cars, or was it sold or scrapped? Or any Ford for that matter.

The repo panels always need filled anyway to some extent, always the top flat of the front wing if nothing else, that's if the fit good and the gap with the door doesn't need adjusted by cutting and welding again

Least there'd be no rust to deal with in these.

You'd build everything into the shell before doing any work on it to make sure everything fits and it's aligned alright.

Only going on what I have been told, I thought 50 was a bit light myself!
Panels etc are unlimited so that is maybe where he is hoping to recoup the costs. Probably easier selling panels than whole shells. Very few rally men will want to spend 7k on a shell that is going to be cut to pieces anyway, and a Chinese shell is not going to please an RS bufty..........

Still, I'll be keeping an eye on gumtree, couple of years down the line you might pick up an "unfinished project", something half fitted, most of the bits there to finished for about £5k lol

7k for a decent mk2 escort build is probably neither here nor there. having seen the state of some of the shells being imported and worked on, id say they are spending close to that on prep and welding now.

It's great to see the effort being put into getting these made again, due to the amount of money involved to get it up and running.

Have an absolute cracker standard 2 door Escort here with original paint and zero rust with 23k guaranteed miles from new. If i had of been offered anything near 7k for her before now i'd have broke buyers arm and all. I am now looking forward to hearing how these new shells from China sell. Hope they go like hot cakes and demand goes through the roof...

The trade in old escort IDs will thrive now, there will be big efforts to avoid having to register them on a 'q' plate.
