Lanes/Targa Rallies

@Graham I took it to work a couple of days with the intake. 1st run from up out of Corrs Corner I thought it pulled like a train, then the next morning I didnt really notice any difference. I assumed it was all in my head, and was missing the induction note, so decided to shelve it. When I went to to remove it tho, the flimsy ducting was in tatters, so maybe thats what happened between the two runs. I thought drawing in air from outside instead of under bonnet should help with the low speed tests too (thats when under bonnet temps rise the most) ... I'll give it one more try and see.

@John_MK5 When talking to mates who would be more track day orientated I'd say stuff like "Aye, sometimes we even get into third for a bit, about 70ish" and they're not that impressed, until you explain the bumpy forest tracks, concrete lanes with high banks either side, going airbourne over a cattlegrid between two stone pillars etc etc... It can be just as hairy in 1st at times as well tho, bombing in round a real tight farm yard or that!

On mine, the air filter was sitting in the factory location, about 8 inches from the hot exhaust manifold. The guy that had it before, had ducted the filter directly to the void below the windscreen, so it could draw cooler outside air, not more of it.

The alternative to that is, do a @John_MK5 and take the bonnet off & let er breath all she wants! lol

Asked this in the Navigation rally thread too.

But is there engine size limits to this kinda thing?

Have a car with a 2.5 V6, would be interested in having some fun with it.

What sort of a car is it? If it's a saloon car it will probably be too big to have much fun in on a targa, some bits can get very tight. You need a small hatchback car for best results, or a MX-5 (like everyone else).

Strange question, maybe even stupid, but I've picked up a Fiat Seicento Sporting, and fancied giving this a go, but I'm a complete novice, and wouldn't know where to start in terms of car prep or what I'd be doing when I arrived at the start line! Is it easy to pick up on and compete in?

Yes, very easy. Navigation between tests is fairly straightforward and most of the tests are fairly short and easy to remember.
Make sure your handbrake is in good working order and you'll be fine. Sumpguard would be advisable but not essential if you apply a bit of mechanical sympathy.
Waiting to hear about an entry for the springfling myself..;)

Aw!.. A bean tin with an engine, it's perfect! If it's MOT'd, taxed and insured then you're good to go. A half decent handbrake will help and a sumpguard too, tho plenty of people run without, just keep an eye out for any rough bits.

Dungannon's Springfling is next weekend so you'd need to get the entry away ASAP or ring the secretary (see regs for a contact). It was brilliant last year. Failing that, Cookstown MC are having their 1st of 2 lanes rallies a fourtnight later on 2nd May.

Here's the list of targa rallies for the year... http://www.anicc.org.uk/Discipline.aspx?d=17

A few pens / highlighters to scribble a few notes on the diagrams will help too... I'll see if I can scan a typical test diagram in the next day or two for reference.

It feels like it's been ages since the last rally so we're excited / nervous enough ourselves about getting back out.

The clubs say the Springfling is 97% sealed surface, Cookstown Targa is 100% sealed surface, so you would probably be fine without a sump guard for these 2 rallies.

Don't worry about not knowing what you are doing, just turn up in good time and there will be plenty of people to keep you right.

@purplea4T & anyone else thinking of giving the Lanes a go, here's a few test diagrams from last years Ballynahinch and Queens events. Could'nt get any without notes scribbled over them. Our notes are maybe a bit messy and overcomplicated at times. The diagrams are rarely even close to scale so really just to show any tight corners and the correct path through chicanes and pylons.

Also remember to get yourselves a small spill kit and warning triangle too.
