And so it begins... Here's to 2016's Targa's (b)(b)

2016 Spring Fling Targa with National Windscreens

This should be a super event! Get the entries in early to avoid dissappointment.

Any craic / developments with any other crews?... I've only just put the MX through MOT. could really do with at least a new clutch plate, but will try to get another event out of it... and should throw a coat of paint at it.. probably the roughest car on the scene.

Does anyone know anything about this 'letter' that the ANICC has sent around to the motorclubs? Apparently banning unsealed surfaces and hydraulic handbrakes all together and slowing them way down? Not liking the sound of it. Surely they just cant change the MSA regulations to suit themselves?

The ANICC are taking more of an interest in Targa rallies this year than they have before. The idea isn't to spoil the fun but to try and safeguard the events for the future.
The ANICC are not banning sealed surfaces or hydraulic handbrakes.

There will be a single scrutineer appointed for all Targa rallies so that scrutineering is consistent across all the events. The scrutineer will be working to the MSA blue book, no additional regulations, no tightening up of any regulations.
Targa rallies are intended to be a low cost, entry level motorsport. The ANICC is concerned that some of the surfaces used are too rough for a standard car and have asked the clubs to look at the lanes they are using. A loose surface is perfectly fine, but big holes, ruts, large stones, large tree roots etc. should be avoided. No one wants to have to rebuild a car after every Targa rally.

The ANICC are not the bad guys. The aim is to bring consistency to the scrutineering, and to reduce peoples repair bills.

V8 Triumph 2000,
Ciaran, regarding the above:

The "Blue book" is quite clear on Road rallies, like it or as in my position, loathe it.
The archaic road rally rules were invented to stop group 4 escorts and the like competing in non closed road events (especially in Wales) and have remained pretty much unchanged since their inception in the late 1970's/early 1980's. They have little or no relevance to the 21st century yet we are stuck with them.
What is the anicc doing to bring this up to date?
I do recognise the change for '16 where you don't have to run multiple permits if a few "historics" want to come out to play, but the time and effort required for a small club to chase waivers is a complete bollocks.
Regarding the "suggestions" that the anicc are making. Where do they come from?
Are they, as I suspect from the usual insular thinking or are you actually making informed decisions from experience gleaned from competing in recent events in England, Scotland, Wales and the South?
What power does the anicc have to appoint/impose a specific scrutineer to a clubman event?
The idea of low cost motorsport is just a thing the MSA have to be seen to pander to but the facts show that their real interest is in something from which they can actually profit.
The suggestion that some events are too rough is another red herring. The clubs are lucky to get "lanes" to run on and can not afford to lose the ones a couple of people may claim to have caused them damage. The driver is supposed to be in control and had exclusive use of the accelerator and brake pedals.
It would be useful to look at the results from the 2014 QUB Summer lanes before pushing that further. Again I would ask if the people questioning the surface have ever ventured out of Northern Ireland to experience properly rough surfaces.
The point about Hydraulic handbrakes is another MSA annoyance, regarding the original pivot I think there are only a handful of legal ones fitted
In reality the MSA again do not understand that a clubman uses one car for multiple disciplines, and can not afford to have a different car for autotesting, multi venue events, navigation rallying, Road (targa) rallying, hillclimbing and sprinting etc. Again the governing body seems happy to make the sport accessible to those rich enough to have a garage full of individual specialist machines and not cater for our grass roots.
There are so many other items but life is much too short!

^^^I think that message should be read at the next ANICC meeting. If a test is rough to the point it might damage a car, it's in the driver control to slow down, nobody's forcing them to go as fast as the car can. I've never heard of anyone damaging there car on a test and blaming the organisers for using the test. I think the vast majority of us would rather fix something now and again rather than see events having to be cancelled because clubs can't find perfect tests. Every targa/lanes driver I know of doesn't use the daily road car for the events anyway, so it's not as if they'll be stuck without a car after an event. We have a dam good wee sport here and I don't thing too many people want it to change.

Very quiet on here with only a few days to the Springfling, is everyone out in the sheds getting cars ready, doing the final tweaks and adjustments?? I suppose @FM155 is out terrorising the neighbours getting used to RWD

I wish lol. I'm in England and the car has had feck all done to it. Gonna just do some basics on Friday night and give it a whirl. No hydro handbrake or feck all but sure it'll be a bit of craic. ;)

First one ever on Saturday, looking forward to it! What's the deal with notes etc, is everything just handed out on the day? Any advice on what to bring?

Yes, everything handed out on the morning.
Clipboard is useful for the roadbook and test diagrams.
Other than warning triangle and spill kit, nothing else I can think of.

Not much excitement here, other than trying to make an MX5 MX5 shaped again. Still need to paint wheels, fit tyres, connect handbrake, fit steering wheel, check alignment, and change oil and filters.

Since the Derek Walker back in Feburary I've only driven it to MOT & back. :confounded: Looking forward to getting out tho. Dungannon's tests are super, and not too rough at all (for anyone worrying about running without sump / diff guards).

That's pretty much all mines has done since Magherafelt's Targa besides a 5 mile trip up the road to a shed it was stored in for 6 weeks over Christmas. Raring to get going again. Hopefully will be as good of event this year as it was last year, although I'm going to try and avoid knocking over @peespeed this year lol

Cheers for the offer @John_MK5 but I'll be over here till thursday night and the car is at home so I'll just go manual on this one.
Got a few things to sort out with it on Friday but there's just a limited amount of time I can spend on it at the moment with work demands. Better to be busy than bored.. ;)

Got the handbrake and sump guard last night. Just need to get some practice which is what I'm really missing :grinning:
