yup, more or less, hence Citroen pulling it's 2016 campaign to focus on developing the new car (engine is already 2 years in racing development via the WTCC ;))

I know I'm in my own on this, but I don't think the new rules will solve any of the fundamental issues affecting WRC.

More elitist, specialist cars mean bigger costs. Bigger costs are a disincentive to manufacturers wishing to join the sport. Also, it makes it harder for the likes of M-Sport, who have no manufacturer backing, to compete.

Closer fields and closer finishes creates bigger interest. Interest means better media exposure and more sponsorship.

I wish the FIA had siezed the opportunity to create regs which would level the playing field like BTCC do so well.

Agree @Cess .... It's a bit like banning WRC cars from the ITC and pushing everyone to fork out for new RRC and R5 cars :p

Although, it looks I might end up eating my words in that argument, there are a lot of new cars coming in and it looks like next years Tarmac championship is going to be both competitive and exciting.

The Toyota team are unfortunately shaping up nicely, to potentially be a complete shambles....

Time will ultimately tell how Toyota turn out. I hope, for rallyings sake, it turns out well & the Yaris is competitive.

A tad early to be judging in my opinion.

I still think he needs to be rallying next year in order to improve or maintain his pace

Well, a year developing a new car might well mean more hours and miles behind the wheel than a full season rallying... And if it means a guaranteed year or two in a solid and well-financed team, then all the better. Citroen really looks like going nowhere.

He might need to move to deepest Finland though :p Which is not a bad place to be, just literally a very long way from anywhere else.

The good news is that Meeke appears to have a WRC future of some sort sort.

We only know what's reported in the media, but there's fairly obvious disadvantages & advantages to both deals.

I just hope Meeke gets a deal which secures his personal future, his rally future and a sees him driving a properly competitive car.

Kris is at the stage (no pun intended) where has to choose what's right for him. His next contract is likely to be his last.

I'm guessing the Toyota/Makinen set-up is similar to the Ford had with M-Sport? Hope it has the same success.

Although I hope Paul Nagle doesn't smash the back window with a crash helmet à la Luis Moya lol

I have just heard this from a very reliable source but can't guarantee that it is 100% but this guy was the first to reveal that Meeke had got his citroen contract after he done the two rallies in 2013, long before the media had reported it. But here it goes anyway.

The reason Citroen pulled out for 2016 was because they lost the Abu Dhabi sponsorship but have since got it back. Meeke did indeed get an offer from Toyota and took the offer to Citroen and they have matched it and Meeke will contest a full program next year in a WRC DS3. Not sure however if Citroen will re-enter as a manufacture or not or if they will have a second driver. 2017 development plans are exactly as they where before. I also assume this contract will run to atleast the end of 2017 but hopefully 2018.

As I said I cant guarantee its 100% true, we'll just have to see how it plays out. I hope to god its right

This news excites me and scares the ***** out of me.

Looks like Tommi has assembled a good team and Toyota will throw millions at it.

But I just don't have much faith in Tommi.

This is the man who couldn't set up his own car. Ralliart had to employ Lassi Lampi.

Yes, sure, Tomi was terrible, absolute rubbish, lol!

Only managed four world championships after all. I mean, obviously, anyone can do that, no need to know anything about setting up cars, or working with a factory team to create a winning formula, or anything. Clearly just random luck. Four times. Probably no need to even know how to drive (y)

Lol :grinning:

Seriously, lol :grinning:

Whether he can help make Toyota successful or not obviously remains to be seen. But Toyota are not going to be in there for a bit of a lark.

Its well known that Lassi Lampi was a full time test driver for Mitsubishi. Tommi Makkinen did very little testing or development. Also part of Lampi's job was to guide Makkinen on settings during rallies. Lampi was incredibly important to Mitsubishi.

I didn't mention his driving, I was referring to his 'technical' ability. Which is very important as he's stated he will personally undertake a lot of the testing duties.

It's well known that Tommi couldn't test a light bulb.

Lassi Lampi was instrumental in ensuring the Mitsubishi's became and remained a championship winning car.

Tommi likes his cars set up in a very specific manner. When Freddy Loix was forced to run with the same sprag clutch differentials as Tommi, he said the car became undriveable.

Let's hope Tommi leaves the testing and set up duties to someone better suited to the job.... Someone like Kris.

Sure.

So, Tomi won the world championship. Four times.

Freddy Loix won it, let's see, not sure I can count that high... What was it again... Ah, yes, it was never! Not once. Zero times. In fact, the best he managed was 8th according to Wikipedia.

So I guess Tommi must indeed have been completely wrong about how his car was set up.

Yes, that must have been it :grinning:

Anyway, as before, we will have to see how Toyota do. Just because Tomi won championships does not mean he can create a winning car and team. But Toyota are not in it for a lark, so either he delivers or they change management...

What is the relevance of Loix?

In 1995 Tommi won nothing. Richard Burns joined in 1996 and was dispatched to the Asia-Pacific championship to get experience and develop the Lancer in real time. In 1996, Lampi assumes the role of lead test driver at Mitsubishi and is appointed as thepersonal mentor for Makinen. In 1996, Makinen wins his first title.

Lampi guided Makinen very closely. Sanremo 1999: the Finns’ finest hour
